This is America’s Safe Schools Week. 🏫 Safety is a shared responsibility. We’re grateful for the educators, staff, families, students, and community partners who work every day to create schools where everyone feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Strong educational leadership happens when we learn from one another. At our October PAC meeting, CESA 8 superintendents shared best practices, discussed board development, federal priorities, and district health care needs.

October 15th is White Cane Safety Day! 🤍👩‍🦯👨‍🦯

In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson established this national observance to raise awareness and honor the white cane as a symbol of independence and self-reliance for people who are blind or visually impaired.

The white cane is far more than a navigation tool—it represents:

✨ Independence: The freedom to move through the world confidently and on one's own terms, without relying on others to lead the way.

✨ Confidence: Spatial awareness and mobility mastered through practice and skill.

✨ Equality: Equal access to explore, learn, and succeed alongside peers.

At CESA 8, our Vision and Orientation & Mobility (O&M) specialists proudly work alongside local school districts to equip students with the skills and confidence to navigate their world.

At CESA 8, we are proud to support our local school districts by providing itinerant vision services to ensure every student with visual impairment has the tools, skills, and confidence to thrive in and out of the classroom.

Meet the CESA 8 VI / O&M Team. Our dedicated specialists work directly with students, families, and school teams across CESA 8 districts.

Understanding the Roles

TVI (Teacher of the Visually Impaired): Focuses on accessible learning! They adapt classroom materials into Braille, large print, or tactile formats, teach assistive technology, and work directly with teachers and students to ensure seamless access to the curriculum.

O&M (Orientation & Mobility Specialist): Focuses on independence and safe movement! They teach students how to navigate their environments from school hallways to community sidewalks using white canes, sensory cues, spatial mapping, and route planning strategies.

Teaching the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC): Beyond general academics, both our TVIs and O&M specialists teach the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). This specialized framework covers essential life skills that fully sighted students typically learn by visual observation, including independent living, social interaction, self-advocacy, sensory efficiency, and career exploration.

Together, this group is dedicated to fostering independence, confidence, and lifelong success for their students! 💡📚
